Notes:
Wingate’s 2005 work Landscapes of Consciousness has enjoyed many lives in its diverse transcriptional personæ. Originally composed for the organ—perhaps the most sustaining of sustaining-toned instruments—the piece now has a fresh costume in an arrangement for three harps, whose delicate web of pluckings die away in perhaps some of the least sustaining ways possible. But far from a shortcoming here, this gossamer array of sonic delights wraps it charm around the piece’s strange inward-looking darkness to reveal an unexpected new personality. The harp ensemble’s bisbigliando, or gently murmuring tremolo figurations allow the piece’s moments of emptiness to take on an uncanny prominence, while the harp’s characteristic brushed chords caress the inner landscape like clouds of musical introspection.
